讲座摘要:How do negative online ratings affect physician behavior? Despite a substantial body of literature on financial incentives, empirical evidence regarding the impact of non-financial incentives on physicians remains limited. This study investigates the influence of negative ratings received from offline practices on physicians’ online medical services, using data from a prominent online healthcare platform. Our findings indicate that negative ratings lead to a significant increase of 20.6% in the number of online consultations being replied to by physicians, a 57.1% rise in the number of words typed, 45.0% increase in the number of dialogues between physicians and patients, and a 31.3% increase in the number of replies, indicating a noticeable increase in physician efforts. Additionally, negative reviews lead to mixed changes in consultation quality. Physicians in large cities, with high professional titles, or with high ratings tend to adopt a more positive and friendly attitude toward patients, while in smaller cities and among lower-ranked physicians, there is a significantly higher level of similarity in replied texts, which suggests a potential trade-off between the quantity and quality of online consultations.
